News Release: Senators to host Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night on Sunday, Oct. 27

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators (@Senators), in partnership with the Ottawa Senators Foundation (@sensfoundation), will host their sixth annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night in support of prostate cancer research and awareness at Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday, Oct. 27, when the team hosts the San Jose Sharks.

Hockey Fights Cancer, part of the National Hockey League’s cancer awareness program, is a joint charitable initiative founded in December 1998 by the NHL and NHL Players’ Association. It is supported by players, NHL member clubs, NHL alumni, the NHL Officials’ Association, professional hockey athletic trainers and equipment managers, corporate marketing partners, broadcast partners and fans throughout North America. The goal of Hockey Fights Cancer is to raise money and awareness for national and local organizations involved in cancer care and research. To date, the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative has raised more than $12 million.

In support of the initiative, Senators players have been wearing Hockey Fights Cancer decals on the backs of their helmets for all games during the month of October.

This Sunday, Senators president Cyril Leeder, general manager Bryan Murray, and all members of the coaching staff will be wearing lavender Hockey Fights Cancer ties during the game to show support for the initiative.

Prior to the start of Sunday’s 5 p.m. game, Senators wives and girlfriends will join Leeder and Ottawa Senators Foundation president Danielle Robinson when the doors open at 3 p.m. to sell Hockey Fights Cancer merchandise inside Canadian Tire Centre at Gate 1, behind Section 116 and 106. Items available include ties ($75), key chains and money clip packages ($10), T-shirts ($15) and autographed Hockey Fights Cancer mystery pucks ($20). Of those pucks, 200 have been signed by Senators players. In addition, there will be five unsigned pucks, which will entitle the lucky purchaser to meet a Senators player after the game. Select players will also be using lavender-taped sticks for warm-up, which will be available for auction via NHL.com following the game.

Fans attending the game can support Hockey Fights Cancer by retrieving a lavender “I fight for” card upon entering Canadian Tire Centre at any of the aforementioned merchandise locations in additon to two areas on the 200-level behind Section 201 and at the top of the stairs at Gate 1. Fans are encouraged to write the name of someone they know who has been affected by cancer. Fans will then be asked to stand and display their cards during the game’s opening ceremony. Fans can also text message SENS to 45678 for a $10 donation and SENATORS to 45678 for a $5 contribution. The NHL will match funds raised up to a total of $5,000. All proceeds from the sale of Hockey Fights Cancer merchandise and in-arena donatons will be directed in support of prostate cancer research and awareness.
