10th Eugene Melnyk Skate for Kids provides once-in-a-lifetime experience for 100 local children

OTTAWA - Earlier today, Ottawa Senators (@Senators) owner Eugene Melnyk (@MelnykEugene) hosted more than 100 local children at Canadian Tire Centre as part of the 10th annual Eugene Melnyk Skate for Kids.

The group of children from Pinecrest Public School and Dr. F.J. MacDonald Catholic School in Ottawa were welcomed to Canadian Tire Centre by Melnyk before taking to the National Hockey League ice surface for a special afternoon skate.

Melnyk, along with CTV Ambassador Max Keeping, Spartacat, Sens alumni and members of the Ottawa Senators staff, provided each participant with a Senators jersey, a helmet and a new pair of skates. All of the items were donated to the children by the Senators owner.

“I look forward to this day each year,” said Melnyk. “Watching how these children react to receiving their gifts and seeing the absolute joy on their faces when they step on to the ice for the first time is something that is very special to me. It is a wonderful way to kick-off the Christmas season.”

Many of the children who participated in today’s Skate for Kids received their very first pair of skates, then used them to take to the same ice surface as their favourite Ottawa Senators’ players.

Since the inaugural Eugene Melnyk Skate for Kids in 2004, more than 1,000 helmets and pairs of skates have been distributed to youth throughout the region.
