News Release: Senators announce teams for Sens Skills presented by Sport Chek
Sens to showcase skills on Wednesday ahead of stick giveaway at event’s conclusion
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today the rosters for Team White (Jason Spezza) and Team Black (Chris Phillips) for this year’s Sens Skills competition, presented by Sport Chek, which will take place at Canadian Tire Centre on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. The event, which features presenting sponsors London Life – Freedom 55, Canadian Tire, Mark’s, TSN 1200, The Ottawa Citizen and Rogers Television, will see doors open at 6 p.m. Parking on Wednesday will be available free of charge.
The Senators and Sport Chek have recently launched a new fan experience initiative that will see players award their composite sticks to 22 lucky fans in an on-ice ceremony at the conclusion of Sens Skills. Upon entering Canadian Tire Centre, fans will be offered the chance to purchase a Jumpstart Red Ball (for a fee of $5) and will be provided with a ballot to enter to win a Senators player’s event-used stick in support of the Ottawa Senators Foundation. The lucky winners’ names will be announced during the event, after which they will be led to the ice surface to randomly receive a player’s stick.
This year’s teams will wear the Heritage-themed jerseys.
Sens Skills will see players demonstrate their hockey skills in the following categories:
- TSN 1200 puck control relay - observe players illustrating versatility in stickhandling.
- Mark’s fastest skater - see players showcasing their speed on skates.
- Freedom 55 hardest shot - witness the power of an NHL slap shot.
- Ottawa Citizen accuracy shooting - find out who shoots with the most precision.
- Canadian Tire skills challenge - a team event featuring stickhandling, one-timers, passing and a 3-on-1 to stop the clock.
- Sport Chek elimination shootout - who has the moves to be crowned king of the shootout.
The Senators will participate in a 10-minute warmup, from 6:40 p.m. to 6:50 p.m., ahead of the skills competition.
On behalf of Sport Chek, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association, the Senators will donate this year’s net proceeds to the Ottawa Senators Foundation’s SENS RINK project.
Participating alongside the Senators will be 12 minor hockey skaters and two goaltenders from the National Capital Region as selected through the Senators Junior Skills Challenge presented by Canadian Tire. The finals of the Junior Skills Challenge will take place during the afternoon of Sens Skills between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Senators defenceman Cody Ceci, and forward prospect Vincent Dunn, are both graduates of the Junior Skills Challenge program.
Over the past six years, more than 80,000 fans have attended Sens Skills presented by Sport Chek, with the Senators and the NHLPA donating more than $550,000 to local charities on behalf of their partners.
