Senators sign forward Ryan Dzingel to entry-level contract

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today that the club has signed forward Ryan Dzingel to a two-year entry-level contract. Dzingel has signed an amateur tryout agreement and will report to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League.

A native of Wheaton, Ill., Dzingel recently completed his third season of college eligibility with the Big Ten Conference’s Ohio State Buckeyes, establishing new collegiate career-highs in goals (22), assists (24) and points (46) while appearing in each of his team’s 37 games.

Dzingel, a three-time Big Ten Star of the Week this season, was named one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which is annually bestowed to the top player in NCAA Division I men’s hockey, on March 20. He became only the fourth Buckeye to be recognized among the award’s 10 finalists and the first since Columbus’ R.J. Umberger in 2003.

A First Team All-Big Ten honouree, Dzingel led conference players in scoring while tying for the lead in goals this season. An alternate team captain for the first time in 2013-14, Dzingel recorded the 100th point of his collegiate career in a 4-2 Ohio State home loss to Wisconsin on Feb. 15 to become the first player to reach 100 points in his third year of eligibility since Umberger did so more than 10 years ago.

Drafted by the Senators in the seventh round (204th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft, Dzingel has participated in the team’s annual development camp in each of the last three summers.

The 2014 Hobey Baker recipient will be announced on April 11 in Philadelphia, the site of this year’s NCAA Frozen Four tournament.
