Club History - 1931

Poor returns at the box office necessitated more blood-letting by Ottawa. The best defenseman, King Clancy, was sold to Toronto for a reported $35,000 while Syd Howe, Allan Shields and Wally Kilrea were sold to Philadelphia where the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates had relocated. Attendance was steadily declining at the Ottawa Auditorium and only 4,000 fans appeared to see the Senators defeat the Quakers 5-2. But fans were selective and a few nights later, over 10,000 were on hand to see the Canadiens down the Sens 5-4.

The Ottawa Senators won only ten games in 1930-31 and fell into the basement of the Canadian Division. The franchise was granted a one-year suspension and joined the Philadelphia Quakers on the sidelines.

Alex Connell

Alex Connell set a record during the 1927-28 season that has stood the test of time. He registered six consecutive shutouts and was not scored upon for 460 minutes and 49 seconds. Connell entered hockey almost by accident, being talked into playing goal while serving in the army at Kingston in World War I. He turned pro with the Ottawa Senators in 1924 and won the Cup in 1927. In 1928, he allowed only 57 goals in 44 games. He died in Ottawa on May 10, 1958.
