The 1995-96 season was the Ottawa Senators best season in team history. The Club recorded a total of 41 points (18-59-5) and a .250 winning percentage, setting club records for wins and points in a season. The Senators had their best start ever with a 6-5 record in the first 11 games of the season. October 1995 was the Senators best month in team history (5-5). After recording only 5 points in November and December, things changes dramatically with the hiring of Jacques Martin as the Senators Head Coach on January 24, 1996, and the acquisition of goaltender Damian Rhodes in a 3-way deal one day earlier. The Senators were on a 9-game losing streak when Jacques Martin and Damian Rhodes joined the team. The Club posted a 3-7-2 record in the following 12 games, allowing only 35 goals during that period (2.92). On February 20 in St. Louis, the Senators recorded the most decisive victory in team history, a 7-1 decision over the Blues. Damian Rhodes and the Sens tied a club record 3-game winning streak, including back-to-back shutouts from March 13-17, allowing only one goal and shutting out the opponents for more than 120 minutes. The Senators posted a 10-24-4 record (.316) in 38 games under Jacques Martin, with 23 of the games being one-or-two-goal games (61%). The Club's powerplay was improved from 11.4% to 12.3% (13.5% under Jacques Martin), and the penalty killing from 74.4% to 77.9% (82% under Jacques Martin). The Club's goals against average went from 4.09 to 3.53 (2.92 under Jacques Martin), and the goals for average, from 2.27 to 2.33 (2.39 with Martin). The Senators ended the season playing .500 hockey with a 3-3-1 record in the last seven games, allowing only 21 goals (3.00). The club posted a 3-6-1 record in its last 10 games (.350), 6-9-2 in its last 17 games (.412). The Senators concluded their fourth NHL season by eliminating the 1995 Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils from a participation in the 1996 playoffs with a tremendous 5-2 victory on April 13, in New Jersey. AT HOMEThe Senators concluded the season with a 5-5-2 record (.500) and a 2.17 goals against average in the last 12 home games ... The Senators had a 2-12-1 home record (.167) when they moved into the Corel Centre on January 17 ... They posted a 6-16-4 record (.308) in 26 games in the new building, 2-4-1 in the last seven games (.357). ON THE ROADThe Senators set club records for wins (10) and points (20) on the road (10-31-0) ... Seven of the Club's ten road wins were their first in the following cities: NY Rangers, Hartford, Buffalo, St. Louis and New Jersey ... The Sens scored more goals on the road (100) than at home (91) ... 17 Senators totaled more points on the road than at home. VS CONFERENCESThe Senators tied their 1994-95 totals for points versus the Eastern Conference (23) ... Seven of the Club's ten road wins were recorded against the Atlantic Division (38.9%) ... The Sens recorded a team high 32 points (15-37-2) versus teams from other than the Northeast Division. SPECIAL TEAMSThe Senators' penalty killing at home ranked 19th in the NHL (80.9%), the best in team history ... They scored a powerplay goal for a club record six consecutive games from Mar. 7-19 ... The Club scored 23 of its 53 powerplay goals in the 2nd period (43%) ... Steve Duchense ranked 20th among defencemen in powerplay points (7-19-26) ... The Sens scored six powerplay goals in two games on Oct. 15 at Tampa Bay and on Oct. 19 vs. Calgary. TEAM COMPETITIVENESSThe Senators ranked tied for 10th in the NHL with a total of 44 one-or-two-goal games (10-34), the most in team history ... The Club lost 15 games by one goal, the most ever ... 34 of the Club's 59 losses were by one or two goals (57.6%) ... The Senators entered the 3rd period leading or tied 33 times this season, more than any other season. IN THE 3RD PERIODThe Senators were one of nine NHL teams to score most of their goals (39.8%) in the 3rd period (76 of 191 goals) ... It represents the 2nd best 3rd period goal production percentage in the NHL. OVERTIMEThe Sens finished with a 0-3-5 overtime record ... They were one of two teams with the fewest overtime games (8), and the only team without and overtime game on the road in 1995-96. THE BEST ROOKIE
Daniel Alfredsson led the NHL rookies in almost all statistical categories: points (26-35-61), assists, powerplay goals (8), powerplay assists (18), powerplay points (26) and shots (212) ... He ranked 2nd in goals, shorthanded goals (2), game-winning goals (3) and game-tying goals (1) ... He was he only rookie to be selected to the NHL All-Star game, the only rookie to lead his team in scoring, and the only two-time NHL Rookie of the Month. NEW ACQUISITIONSThe Senators made three during the 1995-96 season ... Goaltender Damian Rhodes was obtained in a three-way deal involving the Toronto Maple Leafs and the NY Islanders on January 23 ... Rhodes posted a 10-22-4 record, a 2.77 goals against average and a .906 save percentage in 36 games with the Senators, whick placed him 11th anong NHL goaltenders ... He started 25 consecutive games from Jan. 24 to Mar. 19, setting new club records for consecutive starts and consecutive games played ... Defenceman Wade Redden was also obtained in the deal ... MILESTONESIn 1995-96, Steve Duchense registered his 500th NHL point ... Randy Cunneyworth played his 700th NHL game and reached the 1000 penalty minute mark ... Pat Elynuik played his 500th NHL game ... When he was named Sens' Head Coach on January 24, Jacques Martin was one game shy of his 500th NHL game as an Assistant Coach (499). 1995-96 MISCELLANEOUSThe Sens recorded their 50th NHL win on April 5 vs. the Islanders ... Daniel Alfredsson scored the franchise's 700 goal on April 6 vs. Washington ...
