Club History - 1997-98

The Senators completed their sixth regular season in the National Hockey League with their first above .500 record in franchise history (34-33-15) and an eighth-place finish in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa also established team records for points (83), wins (34), home wins (18), home points (43), road wins (16) and road points (40) this season.

AT HOME

Ottawa finished the season with an 18-16-7 record, setting team records for most points in a season at home (43) and most home wins in a season (18). Ottawa's finished the regular season with a 5-3-5 record at home over their final 13 games. Ottawa won four straight at home form 10/4 - 10/19 and from 3/5 - 3/14. Ottawa set a team record with an eight-game undefeated streak at home from 2/5 - 3/20, going 5-0-3 in the process. Ottawa lost five straight at home from 11/8 - 11/22.

ON THE ROAD

The Senators posted a 16-17-8 record on the road during the 1997-98 season, setting a team record for most road wins (16) in a season and most road points in a season (40). Ottawa finished the season with a team record five straight wins on the road from 4/5 - 4/19 and without a loss in their last six road games from 3/29 - 4/19 (5-0-1) - also a team record. Ottawa posted five straight road losses from 2/4 - 3/16 and went winless on the road from 1/10 - 1/27 (0-2-3) and from 2/4 - 3/16 (0-5-0).

THIS AND THAT

Ottawa was shutout a team record 10 times. Ottawa allowed only one powerplay goal in their last 10 games (1/41). The Senators established a club record for most points (83), most wins (34), most road wins (16) and most road points (40) in a season. Ottawa allowed a season-high 19 shots on goal in the second period against Tampa Bay on Apr 13. Ward's goal on a penalty shot on Apr 11 vs Buffalo (4-4 tie) was the second penalty shot allowed by Ottawa this season. Bure also scored on Rhodes on Feb 28 in a 6-4 loss. Yashin's three points in the first period against Buffalo (Apr 11) tied a team record. Ottawa changed goalies in 11 games. Ottawa posted only one shot on goal in the first period against Boston on Apr 7 (tying a club record set on Feb 3, 1996 against New Jersey).

MOLSON CUP

Yashin won the Molson Cup with 105 points (10 firsts, four seconds and seven thirds). Rhodes won for the month of April with 20 points. Yashin won the Molson Cup for March with 20 points. Dackell won the Molson Cup for February with 15 points. Rhodes won the January Molson Cup Award with 20 points. Tugnutt won in December with 20 points. Rhodes won in November with 10 points. Alfredsson won the first monthly award in October with 25 points.

INJURIES

Ottawa missed 184 man-games to injury during the 1997-98 season...York (with a bruised right eye) and Neckar (torn meniscus in his right knee) finished the regular season on the injured list...Dennis Vial was sidelined with a dislocated knee cap for 22 games...Bruce Gardiner missed 21 games with a torn MCL while Vaclav Prospal was out for 18 games with a fractured left fibula...Alfredsson missed 21 games with a an ankle injury and broken right fibula...Prospal missed a total of 24 games with his broken fibula, a bruised left thumb and face laceration ... Gardiner missed the most games with his torn MCL, and bruised thigh sidelining him for 26 games.

ATTENDANCE INFO

In 41 home games, the Senators hosted 685,954 fans for an average of 16,730 fans a game. The club also played in front of a team record 13 sell-outs...Ottawa's average attendance during the 1996-1997 season was 15,371...Ottawa averaged an increase of 1,359 fans a game over the 1996-1997 season...The Senators posted three consecutive sell-outs from Feb 5 vs Toronto, Feb 7 vs Pittsburgh and Mar 5 vs Colorado...Ottawa's last two home games were sell-outs (April 11 vs Buffalo and April 16 vs Montreal).

ROSTER MOVES

Ottawa used a total of 31 players and three goalies this season...Ottawa made three trades involving Senators players, sending Sean Hill to Carolina for Chris Murray on Nov 18 and Alexandre Daigle to Philadelphia for a second-round pick and Vaclav Prospal and Pat Falloon on Jan 17...Defenceman Per Gustafsson was obtained from Toronto on Mar 17 for an 8th round pick...Defenceman Radim Bicanek saw the most movement. He was recalled from Manitoba (IHL) on three different occasions and played in one game (Mar 1).

Ottawa was shutout for a record 10th time against Montreal on April 16...Ottawa established a club record of 83 points with their 2-1 win over Buffalo on Apr 19. The win also set a record for victories in a season at 34 and road points in a season (40). The win was also Ottawa's fifth straight on the road (a team record) and their sixth consecutive road games without a loss (also a team record). The Senators also tied a team record with 22 shots on goal in the 1st period...Ottawa's 4-4 tie vs Buffalo on April 11 gave the club the new team record of home points (43) in a season...Yashin tied a team record with three points in the first period vs Buffalo on April 11...In a 4-2 loss to Boston on April 7, Ottawa posted only one shot on goal in the first, tying a club record set on Feb 3, 1996 against New Jersey...In a 2-1 loss to Chicago on Mar 27 and a 3-2 win against New Jersey on Apr 3, Ottawa tied a season-high by allowing 16 shots on goal in a period (second for Chicago and third for New Jersey)...Ottawa established a team record of 53 shots against Anaheim (5-2 loss) on Mar 22 and set a record for shots on goal in a period with 22 in the third. The loss snapped Ottawa's eight-game unbeaten streak at home (a club record; 5-0-3) which was reached in a 1-1 tie against Vancouver on Mar 20...Ottawa staged their biggest comeback in team history by overcoming a 4-0 deficit against the NY Islanders in a 4-4 tie on Mar 18...Ottawa's 4-0 win over the Capitals on Mar 14 tied club records for consecutive home wins (4) and consecutive victories (4)...The Senators tied a team record with four powerplay goals in a 5-3 win over Florida on Mar 11...The 12 shots allowed on Feb 5 vs Toronto set a team record, eclipsing the old mark of 14 shots allowed on Dec 23, 1996 in a 6-0 win over Montreal...Rhodes set a team record with his fourth shutout (he now has five) of the season on Jan 20, the previous record of three was set by Tugnutt last season and tied by Tugnutt on Mar 14...Rhodes and Tugnutt have established a team record for shutouts in a season, now at eight (breaking the old mark of four)...Ottawa had a season-low 14 shots in a 1-0 win over San Jose on Oct 7...Ottawa lost five straight on the road (Feb 4 - Mar 16)...Ottawa had a four-game winning streak at home (Mar 5 - 14)...Daniel Alfredsson's goal at 16:54 of the third period on Nov 26 against Detroit, snapped a 187:42 (club record) goalless streak for Ottawa.

PLAYING WITH A LEAD

The Senators are undefeated in 61 of 62 games when leading after two periods (51-1-10) after beating the Buffalo Sabres on April 19. Ottawa entered the third period with a 2-0 lead and held on for a 2-1 win...The Senators were undefeated in 51 games (43-0-8) when leading after two periods until they lost, 6-4, to the Vancouver Canucks on Feb 28, 1998, after leading the game 3-2 after 40 minutes...The last win to cap off the streak was on Feb 5 against the Toronto Maple Leafs...The previous last defeat came on March 24, 1996 when the Senators lost 3-2 to the Edmonton Oilers after taking a 2-0 lead into the third period.

CAREER HIGHS

Yashin finished the regular season with a 210 consecutive games played streak...Dackell surpassed his high in goals with 15, beating the old mark of 12...Laukkanen had a career-high four goals this season...Redden established a career-high with eight goals, surpassing his total of six in 1996-97...Lambert doubled his career-high with nine goals this season (he had four in 1996-97)...Gardiner passed his high in assists (10, set in 1996-97) with his 11th assist against New Jersey on Apr 2.
