Prior to the start of the season, the league made changes to its constitution Any club failing to put in an appearance after fifteen minutes of advertised time for the start of a game would be fined $10.00. The Ottawa team was strengthened by the return of Bruce Stuart who would score 9 goals in eight games. A big upset was scored on Ottawa at the start of the season when the Senators dropped a game by a score of 2-1 to the devitalized Shamrocks. Bouse Hutton was outstanding in goal recording two shutouts, which was quite an achievement at the time.
In 1902, there were two challenges made for the Stanley Cup. The first awarded in January to the Winnipeg Victorias; the second, a month later, to the Montreal AAA who defeated the Winnipeg team.
William (Hod) Stuart
The life of one of hockey's first great defensemen ended tragically with a diving accident on June 23, 1907, in Belleville, Ontario. Along with his brother Bruce, William (Hod) Stuart broke into bigtime hockey with the Senators in 1898. During his short playing career, Hod Stuart scored a total of 16 goals in the 33 games for which records are available.
