Club History - 1918

The National Hockey League is created after squabbling among owners led to the demise of the National Hockey Association. The NHL first operated with four franchises, but when the Montreal Arena, home of both the Wanderers and the Canadiens, burned down on January 2, 1918, Wanderers owner Sam Lichtenheim pulled his team out of the league after only six games. The Canadiens decided to continue their season, playing in the tiny Jubilee rink.

The Senators did not have too good a season with a third place finish after winning only 9 of 22 games. Quebec's Joe Malone won the scoring title with 44 goals, a record that stood for many years, but was given a good challenge from Ottawa's Cy Denneny who recorded 36 goals. The first Stanley Cup in the NHL was won by the Toronto Arenas.

Samuel Russell (Rusty) Crawford

Born in Cardinal, Ontario, on November 7, 1884, Rusty Crawford played hockey until he was 45 years of age. The fast-skating forward joined the Quebec Bulldogs in 1912-13 and helped them win the Stanley Cup that year. In 1918 he went to the Ottawa Senators for four games before joining the Toronto Arenas. He also played with Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver and ended his career with Minneapolis in 1929. He died on December 19, 1971.
