Skills First Challenge presented by Bell

The Skills First Challenge presented by Bell returns for teams and players from novice to peewee for the ’09-’10 season. This initiative allows participants the opportunity to embark upon an unforgettable experience while focusing on individual skill development as they compete against their peers in various challenges. Challenges are hosted by minor hockey teams who will submit the scores to the Ottawa Senators; top performers will then be invited by an Ottawa Senators representative to participate in the Finals at Scotiabank Place. Skills First Challenge Champions will win the chance to either compete alongside the Ottawa Senators as they take to the ice in front of thousands of rabid fans for Sens Skills presented by Bell or participate in an on-ice intermission activity during an Ottawa Senators home game at Scotiabank Place.
The Skills First Challenge presented by Bell is an easy-to-implement tool for coaches and players, which promotes fundamental player skill development in a fun and challenging setting while focusing on:
- Skating (forwards and backwards)
- Agility
- Puck Control
- Shooting Accuracy
- Lateral Movement (Goaltenders only)

Coaches are encouraged to test their team at the beginning of the hockey season, thereby putting a benchmark on their players’ abilities. Throughout the year, coaches are encouraged to retest their players and compare the new results to the benchmark, which will motivate players to improve their skills while demonstrating their progress with tangible, comparable results.
The Skills First Challenge presented by Bell featured over 500 minor hockey players from across the Ottawa-Gatineau region throughout the 2008-09 season. Top participants were invited to Scotiabank Place to compete in the finals that took place on January 18, 2009.
