Senators-Capitals Preview

GAME: Ottawa Senators (32-15-7-4) at Washington Capitals (18-32-6-2).

TIME: Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST.

The Ottawa Senators will try to keep pace in the Northeast Division race when they meet the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center.

The Senators are one point behind Toronto for the division lead following Monday's 4-1 road victory over the New York Rangers. The Maple Leafs, who won 8-4 at Pittsburgh on Monday, will also be in action Tuesday as they host division-rival Boston.

Ottawa got a goal and an assist from Zdeno Chara as it won its fourth straight since the All-Star break. The goal was the career-high 13th for Chara, who has eight multipoint games this season. The 26-year-old defenseman had a goal and two assists Saturday against Montreal.

Daniel Alfredsson, who has scored three goals in two victories over the Capitals this season, is riding a five-game point streak after contributing an assist on Monday. He has six points over that stretch.

The Senators have the league's second-ranked power-play unit by percentage, and the third-best on the road. Martin Havlat scored with the man advantage Monday, giving Ottawa its NHL-leading 64th power-play goal.

Havlat, the team's third-leading scorer with 46 points, reached 20 goals for the third time in his four-year NHL career.

While the Senators are in position to make their eighth straight playoff appearance, the Capitals are 14th in the Eastern Conference standings, 20 points out of the final playoff spot. Washington made its second straight postseason appearance last season, losing in the first round to Tampa Bay.

Washington won a matchup of last-place teams on Sunday, winning 4-0 at Chicago.

Olaf Kolzig stopped 38 shots in earning his second shutout of the season and 33rd of his career, as the Capitals ended a three-game winless streak (0-2-1).

Robert Lang added an assist, extending his point streak to eight games. He has four goals and five assists during his run.

Peter Bondra, who had a power-play goal for the Capitals, has 40 points in 37 career games against the Senators.

The Senators are unbeaten in the last four trips to Washington (3-0-1), and have won seven of the last 10 meetings overall.
