After having their franchise-record winning streak come to an end with a blowout loss in their last outing, the Carolina Hurricanes look to get back on track when they visit an Ottawa Senators team in search of its sixth straight victory.

Carolina had won nine straight games before losing 9-0 to the Atlanta Thrashers at home on Saturday. It was the team's most lopsided defeat since the franchise move from Hartford in 1997.

Goalie Martin Gerber, who had posted shutouts in two of his previous three starts, allowed two goals on the first three shots he faced before being replaced by Cam Ward.

"It's not the goalies," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "It was the team. We lost tonight. Let's leave it at that."

While Carolina lost for the first time since Oct. 20, Eric Staal was held without a point for the first time since Oct. 15. The 21-year-old center had picked up at least one point in 10 straight games, totaling seven goals and 13 assists during that span.

The Hurricanes are one of only two teams to defeat the Senators this season. Gerber stopped 45 shots, including 24 in the final period, in a 3-2 victory on Oct. 24.

Since that loss, Ottawa has won seven of eight games, including five in a row.

The Senators have outscored their opponents 31-9 during the winning streak, led by captain Daniel Alfredsson, who has eight goals and eight assists in the five games.

"We're playing with a lot of confidence, obviously," Alfredsson said. "We're doing a lot of good things out there and once we get up we're not sitting back."

Dany Heatley has contributed seven goals and three assists during the run, and both he and Alfredsson have 15 goals this season.

Heatley has at least one point in all 15 games, matching Jaromir Jagr (1999-00) for the longest point-scoring streak to start a season since Mario Lemieux opened 1995-96 with points in 28 straight contests.

Carolina is looking for its fifth straight road victory, while Ottawa is trying to win for the eighth time in nine games at home.
