Alexander Ovechkin has yet to show anything resembling a sophomore slump.

He will try to extend his points streak to a career-high 12 games when the Washington Capitals start a three-game road trip Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators in the final regular-season meeting between the teams.

Ovechkin has six goals and 12 assists during his current points streak, with Washington going 5-6-0 in that span. During his other career 11-game run, from March 18-April 7, the reigning Calder Trophy winner had one fewer goal and the Capitals went just 3-3-5.

Ovechkin appears to have an excellent chance of extending his streak this time. He's scored points in all three games against Ottawa this season, recording two goals and four assists.

The All-Star has also tallied at least one point in 41 of 50 games this season. Washington is 2-7-0 when Ovechkin is held off the scoresheet.

The Capitals have 49 points and start play in 12th place in the Eastern Conference, five points behind Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay for seventh.

Ovechkin is tied with Atlanta's Marian Hossa and Anaheim's Teemu Selanne for the league lead with 31 goals. Ovechkin's 68 points, though, are second in scoring behind Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby - the player he beat for rookie of the year honors in 2005-06.

The Capitals (21-22-7) have won two of three from the Senators, but lost 5-2 in Ottawa on Jan. 16.

Washington defeated Carolina 7-3 on Saturday to salvage a split of its home-and-home series with the Hurricanes. Ovechkin extended his streak with a goal and assist, and Alexander Semin had two goals - giving his 29 on the season - and an assist.

The Caps haven't had two 30-goal scorers in the same season since Jaromir Jagr had 36 and Peter Bondra added 30 in 2002-03, the team's last playoff season.

"No surprise," Ovechkin said of Semin, a fellow Russian. "He's a tremendous player and a scorer."

Semin didn't have a point in the loss to Senators earlier this month, but had a goal and three assists in his two previous games against them.

After beating Boston in its first game following the All-Star break to sweep a home-and-home set, Ottawa (29-20-2) lost 3-1 at Montreal on Monday.

Chris Phillips scored 52 seconds into the contest, but Senators goaltender Ray Emery allowed tallies by Sheldon Souray, Mark Streit and Tomas Plekanec 2:24 apart midway through the second period.

The Senators dropped one point behind Montreal into third place in the Northeast Division despite losing in regulation for just the third time in 16 games.

"There are going to be games ... you're not going to win all of them," Senators defenseman Wade Redden said. "They obviously had their backs against the wall, there was a lot of talk about them coming out, the way things have been going for them, so we knew they were going to be hungry.

"It was disappointing when we got the start and we didn't keep at them. They got a little momentum going in the second and got some quick goals."

Dany Heatley leads Ottawa with 30 goals and 65 points, but has only a goal and two assists in three games against the Capitals in 2006-07.

Daniel Alfredsson has two goals and two assists in two games versus the Caps this season. He missed the Sens' 6-2 road loss on Dec. 6 with a leg injury.
