Buffalo Sabres 0, Ottawa Senators 5 FINAL

OTTAWA (AP) - The Dominator lived up to his nickname, even as a 40-year-old.

Dominik Hasek stopped 35 shots for his 64th career shutout, and Wade Redden had a goal and two assists to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 5-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

Dany Heatley was credited with a pair of power-play goals, and Jason Spezza and Martin Havlat also scored for the Senators, who improved to 2-0-0 after recording the NHL's first shootout victory Wednesday night with a season-opening 3-2 win in Toronto.

Making his Ottawa debut before a Corel Centre-record crowd of 19,661, Hasek - who turned 40 on Jan. 29 - registered his first shutout since Nov. 10, 2003, for Detroit to win his second straight start with the Senators.

``It was a good workout for me,'' Hasek said. ``We scored power-play goals, that was the big difference in tonight's game. We scored three and they couldn't score on the power play. My teammates cleared the rebounds. I made the first save and the whole game, maybe once or twice, they had a second shot.''

Hasek, who had a team record 55 shutouts with Buffalo from 1992-01, made a pad save on Taylor Pyatt late in the third to preserve the shutout. Hasek is two regular-season shutouts behind Patrick Roy, who is 13th on the NHL list with 66 shutouts for Montreal and Colorado from 1984-03.

``He earned that one tonight,'' Redden said. ``He had a lot of shots, and some quality shots, down low, scrambles in front, he seems to get in the way of them.''

Buffalo, which beat Boston 4-1 on Friday night, lost for the first time in three games. The Sabres are 2-0 at home after opening with a 6-4 win over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

``They play a very good defensive game,'' Sabres captain Daniel Briere said. ``They're a good team. We knew that coming in. It's kind of tough the way the schedule was made up. There's not much of a chance when you're coming to Ottawa after playing the night before and they're waiting for you, but that's the way the schedule is. I thought the first period, we played well. We just didn't get the lucky bounces and after that, we couldn't generate much.''

Redden assisted on Spezza's first goal of the season 14:54 in when he stripped the puck from Sabres defenseman Toni Lydman. Brandon Bochenski passed to Spezza, who deked goalie Ryan Miller and slid the puck into an open right side.

``We build our game around the forecheck,'' Spezza said. ``Tonight, we got it going early and that's how we scored. Dom made some big saves and then we got some power plays.''

Redden drew his second assist as Ottawa went up 2-0 at 8:05 of the second as Heatley deflected the Senators defenseman's shot off Miller's glove. The puck floated over the Buffalo goalie and into the net before Sabres defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick could prevent it from crossing the goal line.

``Both goaltenders made great saves in the game, Dom just made more,'' said Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, who had Hasek as his No. 1 goalie for each of his first four seasons behind Buffalo's bench from 1997-2001. ``From where I was standing, he was the difference. I thought he played great. He made great saves.''

Havlat's short-handed breakaway goal 4:41 into the third increased Ottawa's lead to 3-0.

Redden and Heatley added power-play goals in the third to close out the scoring.

Notes: Martin Biron backed up Miller for the third straight game. Sabres third goalie Mika Noronen has yet to dress this season. ... Hasek also had one shutout with Chicago and seven with Detroit. ... Chris Neil was originally credited with both power-play goals scored by Heatley. The scoring changes were made following the game.
