Maple Leafs 3, Senators 2, SO

OTTAWA (AP) -Mats Sundin steered coach Paul Maurice in the right direction as the Toronto Maple Leafs started to go deep in their shootout list.

John Pohl scored on Toronto's fifth attempt and the Maple Leafs matched their longest winning streak of the season with a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.

Andrew Raycroft, who made 30 saves, stopped Jason Spezza's shot after Pohl scored on his first career shootout attempt with a backhand over Ray Emery's right pad.

Pohl scored on a penalty shot against Minnesota's Manny Fernandez in a 4-3 win over the Wild on Dec. 26.

"I think I saw Mats point to me," the Rochester, Minn., native said after Maurice told reporters that he hadn't chosen the winning shooter.

Sundin, whose 21st goal put Toronto up 2-0 in the second, scored the Maple Leafs' other shootout goal on their second attempt with a similar move to the one Pohl used for the winner.

"(Maurice) was looking down the bench and I was kind of pointing behind John, but I'm sure he was going to pick John anyway," Sundin said.

Toronto has won four straight, matching its streak from Nov. 4-11.

Emery stopped 36 shots for Ottawa, including 11 stops in a scoreless first as he traded big saves with Raycroft.

Mike Comrie took a sensational breakaway pass from defenseman Joe Corvo and beat Raycroft between the pads 8:06 into the third to tie it at 2 as Ottawa drew even with two goals in 3:19.

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson spoiled Raycroft's shutout bid and made it 2-1 with his 19th goal 4:47 into the third.

"I thought we did a good job, being down 2-0 and not letting it get to us," Emery said. "We kept putting pressure on and did a good job to get back in the hockey game and had chances to win, so you can take something from it, but it's always disappointing, losing to the Leafs, especially."

Jeff O'Neill also scored in the second as Toronto outshot its provincial rival 18-8 in the middle period.

"That might have been our best second period of the season, I thought, in terms of executing a game plan and having good chances," Maurice said.

O'Neill shot high and wide to the right on a 4-on-4 breakaway chance with just over 2:00 remaining in the third.

Senators defenseman Tom Preissing, among the NHL's plus-minus leaders, was caught up the ice on O'Neill's opening goal 6:03 into the second.

With Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden back covering him, Toronto's Matt Stajan broke down the left side. Senators forward Mike Fisher, who dropped back to cover for Pressing to Redden's left, attempted to intercept Stajan's centering pass, which the uncovered O'Neill redirected into a wide open right side for his 18th goal.

"It's going to happen in a game," Preissing said. "It's not going to dissuade me from stepping up in the play next time."

Emery stuck out his left pad to stop Bates Battaglia's shot after Christoph Schubert was sent off at 9:41 for hooking Sundin on a breakaway chance by the Maple Leafs' captain late in Toronto's first power-play opportunity.

Sundin had his helmet knocked off by Emery after he crashed into the Senators goalie and hung on to the crossbar, complaining to no avail.

"That's hockey," Sundin said. "Goalies never like when someone goes into the net."

Sundin got his revenge when he made it 2-0 with his 21st goal at 14:52 as the Maple Leafs mounted continued pressure in the Senators' zone following their second straight power-play opportunity.

The Senators finally got one past Raycroft when Alfredsson slipped behind Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle to redirect Jason Spezza's slap pass from the left point inside the right post from the right edge of the crease.

Ottawa thought they had tied it seconds later when Mike Fisher raised his stick in celebration after he thought his backhand beat Raycroft.

Play was stopped at 4:59 for a video review as Toronto's Nik Antropov carried the puck out of the Maple Leafs' zone. TV replays showed that Fisher's shot rebounded off the right post and off the crossbar behind Raycroft before bouncing back into play.

Comrie, who had no points in his previous three games, left no doubt on the equalizer.

Setting up behind the Senators' net, Corvo took a few strides before firing a pass up the middle to Comrie, who received the puck with speed as he crossed the Maple Leafs blue line.

The diminutive center drove in alone on Raycroft and slipped a shot along the ice between the Maple Leafs goalie's legs to the delight of most of the crowd of 20,112 which included a significant and vocal presence of Toronto fans.

Notes: Raycroft's only shutout in 44 games this season came in Toronto's second game of the season on Oct. 5 when he stopped 34 shots in a 6-0 win in Ottawa. ... Maple Leafs C Boyd Devereaux missed his third straight game because of an ankle injury. ... Through Friday, Preissing's plus-30 was second only to Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom's league-best plus-33. ... Ottawa has only been shut out twice this season, and not since a 1-0 loss to Calgary on Oct. 12. ... Senators RWs Brian McGrattan and Denis Hamel were healthy scratches.
