Capitals-Senators Preview
Washington Capitals vs. Ottawa Senators

Following a brief slump, Alexander Ovechkin has quickly gotten back on track and so have the Washington Capitals.

Given Ovechkin's recent history against Ottawa, that could mean a long night for the Senators (15-21-7) when they host the reigning league MVP and the Capitals (30-14-3) on Tuesday.

By scoring his 30th and 31st goals in Monday's 2-1 overtime victory at the New York Islanders, Ovechkin took over sole possession as the NHL's goal-scoring leader for the first time this season, one ahead of Philadelphia's Jeff Carter.

After a four-game drought, the Washington winger has scored four times during the Capitals' three-game win streak. Washington had lost three straight before its recent string of victories, but remains one of the league's hottest teams with 16 wins in its last 21 games.

Ovechkin scored twice in the teams' previous meeting - a 5-1 home victory Dec. 12, giving him nine goals in his last seven games against the Senators. He has also scored six times in his last four trips to Scotiabank Place and tied career highs there on Dec. 29, 2007, with four goals and five points in an 8-6 victory.

In addition to Ovechkin, the Capitals have gotten strong contributions from Mike Green and Alexander Semin during their win streak.

With an assist Saturday, Green extended his point streak to five, and Semin, who set up Ovechkin with the game-winning goal 1:46 into overtime, has recorded a point in four consecutive games.

Despite missing 18 games to injury, Semin is second on the Capitals with 18 goals and third with 39 points, recording at least one in all but four of his 28 games.

Jose Theodore stopped 26 shots for his 200th career win Monday and his second straight start allowing one goal. With Brent Johnson suffering an injury in practice last week, Theodore has started the last four games, and he has a 9-2-0 mark in his last 11 starts.

The Capitals have scored seven times on their last 23 power plays, but they have also allowed nine power-play goals in the last seven games.

Thanks to a resurgent offense, Ottawa enters Tuesday with a 2-0-1 mark in its last three games.

The Senators have scored 12 times in that span, including Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss to visiting Montreal. Dany Heatley netted a pair of third-period goals and Mike Fisher added another with 1:47 remaining in regulation as Ottawa rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime.

"We showed a lot of resilience to come back and tie the game and get the point," center Jason Spezza said. "It would have been nice to win in the shootout, but we just have to move on."

After scoring twice over a 14-game stretch, Heatley has three goals in the past three games, and Fisher extended his point streak to three.

Heatley's linemates - captain Daniel Alfredsson and Spezza - also have three-game point streaks coming into Tuesday. Spezza has also recorded six goals and nine assists in his last 13 contests.

Washington has gone 5-0-1 in its last six versus the Senators and 2-0-1 in its last three trips to Ottawa, with the only blemish a 2-1 overtime loss on Nov. 4.
