TORONTO (AP) - Dany Heatley took advantage of the new NHL and had a lot of fun at Toronto's expense.
Heatley scored four consecutive goals to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 8-0 rout over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
``I'm a fan of the rules,'' Heatley said smiling. ``It's been an exciting month in the NHL.''
He netted his first on a rebound when goalie Ed Belfour failed to catch a puck after initially making a glove save. Heatley made it 4-0 at 1:16 of the second period after Toronto's defense failed to check him in front of the net.
The next goal came after he fell down but still scored on a one-timer from the circle at 4:19 of the second.
Heatley recorded his career-high fourth goal on a breakaway at 5:33 of the third. He is the first NHL player with four goals in a game since Vancouver's Daniel Sedin did it Feb. 24, 2004, versus Detroit.
``Dany was Dany tonight. He was flying. He had the one-timer going,'' Ottawa's Jason Spezza said. ``I was just a spectator tonight.''
Acquired from Atlanta in a trade for Marian Hossa, Heatley entered with two career hat tricks, his last coming on Jan. 23, 2003, at the New York Rangers. He has eight goals in nine games with the Senators.
Heatley asked the Thrashers to trade him because he wanted a fresh start after the 2003 car wreck that killed Atlanta teammate Dan Snyder while Heatley was driving.
``It's a great league starting up again,'' Heatley said. ``I had a lot of fun.''
The Maple Leafs lost at home by eight goals for the first time since falling 10-2 to the Winnipeg Jets on March, 18, 1989.
``It was pretty lousy, maybe worst than that,'' Toronto coach Pat Quinn said. ``We have to start playing like a team.''
Backup Mikael Tellqvist replaced Belfour after Heatley's third goal. Belfour allowed five goals on 15 shots.
Dominik Hasek made 27 saves for his second shutout of the season and 65th of his career, one behind Patrick Roy for 13th on the NHL list. The Senators improved to 3-0 over their provincial rivals.
``That's all they talk about,'' Heatley said of Ottawa fans.
After Toronto fell behind 4-0, enforcer Tie Domi and Ottawa's Brian McGrattan dropped the gloves. McGrattan bloodied Domi's nose with a punch that sent Domi to the ice.
``I grew up just down the road in Hamilton, so I grew up watching the Leafs. I kind of know how Tie fights,'' said McGrattan, who broke an AHL single-season record with 551 penalty minutes.
``The kid got his arm out of the sweater somehow, and landed a good punch,'' Quinn said.
Some observers noted they hadn't seen Domi bleed in years.
``I'm not a figure skater. I still have a reputation,'' Domi said. ``I throw down my gloves once in a while. You got to give that that kid credit. He's done what he had to do to stick around in the NHL. I've been there before.''
Toronto's Darcy Tucker also tried to get his team going with a series of big checks in the second period, but he found himself sprawled on the ice after a hit by Ottawa's Anton Volchenkov.
Mike Fisher gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead at 1:39 of the first. Belfour failed to clear the puck from his end and passed it to Alfredsson. He centered a pass to Fisher, who scored on a one-timer.
Chris Neil made it 2-0 after a rebound deflected off the skate of Wade Belak, and past Belfour at 15:36 of the second.
Notes: Belak, Toronto's other enforcer, had his nose broken in a fight in Thursday's loss to Boston. ... Toronto's Mariusz Czerkawski (shoulder) and Aki Berg (ribs) didn't play. ... Kelly scored his first goal.
