EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson was more than willing to trade some stitches for a power-play goal.

After Edmonton defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron drew a double-minor for clipping Alfredsson's lower lip with a high stick, Dany Heatley scored a power-play goal in the Senators' 5-3 victory over the Oilers 5-3 on Saturday night.

"That turned the game definitely in our favor," Alfredsson said. "When we got a 4-minute penalty after that, I think we controlled the game pretty good."

Vaclav Varada scored twice - his third and fourth goals of the season - and Antoine Vermette and Peter Schaefer also scored to help the Senators tie Philadelphia and Detroit for the NHL lead with 63 points. Ottawa, coming off a 2-0 home loss to San Jose on Thursday night, had lost four of its last six games.

"A tight game," Senators coach Bryan Murray said. "We played very disciplined."

Bergeron scored all three goals for the Oilers - all on slap shots from the point.

"We're finding a way to lose," Bergeron said. "Hopefully, we're going to get those wins back later in the year."

After Bergeron scored twice in a 4:15 span midway through the first period to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead, Ottawa took control with three second-period goals.

Heatley tied it at 2 on the power play at 1:08 of the second, Vermette gave the Senators the lead at 10:23, and Schaefer made it 4-2 at 11:56. Heatley's goal was his team-leading 28th of the season.

Oilers goalie Ty Conklin was pulled after Schaefer tipped the puck past him after it bounced out from behind the goal. Conklin allowed four goals on 16 shots.

"We were a little sloppy with our sticks," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "We made a bunch of mistakes in front of him."

Bergeron completed his hat trick with 5:42 left in the second period.

Jussi Markkanen made seven saves in relief of Conklin, allowing only Varada's goal with 5:43 left in the third period.

Senators goalie Dominik Hasek made 23 saves.

Notes: Ottawa has only one more regular-season game left outside the Eastern time zone, on Monday night in Minnesota. ... Oilers forward Shawn Horcoff had a pair of assists to run his scoring streak to a career-high eight games.
