NEWARK, N.J. — Rookie Adam Henrique scored on a backhander in the fourth round of the shootout to give the New Jersey Devils a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

Zach Parise and Patrik Elias also scored in the shootout for the Devils, who trailed 3-0 with about five minutes left in the second period before scoring four unanswered goals.

Ottawa's Jesse Winchester scored a shorthanded goal to tie it with just 4.9 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal came after the Senators pulled goalie Alex Auld with 21 seconds to go.

Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson scored in the shootout for the Senators, but Devils goalie Johan Hedberg, who replaced Martin Brodeur to start the second period, stopped David Rundblad to earn the win.

Trailing 3-1 entering the third, the Devils cut it to 3-2 on a shorthanded tally from Dainius Zubrus, then Matias Tedenby and Ilya Kovalchuk each scored in a span of 37 seconds to give New Jersey a 4-3 lead.

Tedenby scored his first goal of the season after the puck deflected off his chest on a shot by David Clarkson, tying it 3-3. Kovalchuk followed with his eighth goal of the season off a fine setup from Henrique, his second assist of the game.

Zach Parise also had a shorthanded goal for the Devils, his eighth overall this season.

Milan Michalek scored his 18th goal of the season in the first period, breaking the tie for the league lead he shared with Toronto's Phil Kessel and Jonathan Toews of Chicago.

Nick Foligno also scored in the first period for Ottawa and Daniel Alfredsson scored with the advantage in the second — the first power-play goal the Devils have allowed at home all season.

The Senators took the early lead when Michalek was the beneficiary of an ill-advised clearing attempt by Brodeur. He took the puck behind the net to clear it but the attempt was intercepted by Spezza, who hit Michalek on the left side for a goal at the 6:31 mark.

The Devils killed off a four-minute power play in the first period, when Petr Sykora was sent off with a high sticking double-minor. During that stretch, Brodeur made three saves and the Devils feverishly cleared out three other attempts.

The Senators pushed the lead to 2-0 in the closing minutes of the first period, when Jared Cowen's slap shot was initially stopped by Brodeur, but Foligno secured the rebound and lifted a backhander in at 17:45 for the two-goal lead.

Devils coach Peter DeBoer then lifted Brodeur, who stopped seven of nine shots, in favor of Hedberg to start the second.

Ottawa pushed the lead to 3-0 on a power-play goal with both Sykora and Tedenby in the box. Alfredsson scored his ninth of the season on a nice give-and-go with Erik Karlsson at 9:41. Spezza got his second assist on the goal.

NOTES: Devils D Andy Greene will miss four weeks with a non-displaced toe fracture. Greene had no goals and nine assists in 23 games this season ... Alfredsson's second-period goal snapped New Jersey's streak of 40 straight penalty kills at home in 11 games. It was the longest streak in the franchise's history ... Devils C Travis Zajac has resumed skating after undergoing surgery for a torn Achilles tendon in August, but there is no timetable for his return. The team hopes he can return to action before Christmas ... The Senators return home to face the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night at Scotiabank Place (7 p.m., CBC, Team 1200).
